If you have been paying attention to the artists currently making big waves in the music scene you would surely have come across Syracuse, NY, artist, Molly D’Ago. Previously hitting the music charts with her single ‘My Sweet Burning Heart, Molly has made her claim as one of the notable female voices on the nu rock scene today. Now, Molly brings us the brand-new emotional ballad ‘Someone Just Like You’, a song that features her signature smooth-as-silk vocals and heartfelt lyrics aimed at making a few listeners cry.
Someone Just Like You is cinematic, dramatic, and beautiful. It is a song that could easily find itself placed on a movie soundtrack or in a popular show that deals with heartbreak, because this song is very much about the emotional distress one can find when they know they are not the person their person might be looking for; at least that is how I perceived the message.
I am a sucker for a song that unfolds like a story, that captures a bit of punk, a bit of rock, a bit of nu-anything, and weaves that together in a pleasant package, and Someone Just Like You ticks off all those boxes nicely. The production is spot on, with the guitars share center-stage with Molly’s ranging vocals, and nothing gets buried here. It is a radio-ready single if ever there was one, and what a great start to 2024 for Molly! No doubt this year will be filled with some great milestones for her if this is the direction, she continues to move in.
I have compared Molly D’Ago to the likes of Paramore, and as they say, “if the shoe fits”, and it still certainly does here, but this is more like the Paramore we all came to love back when they put out their hit single Decode. Someone Just Like You could have been placed on that soundtrack easily, which is why I think this song will be embraced by a large audience. Once the song starts it never lets up its fierce pace, and even the breakdown is more of a set-up for Molly to lean into a higher vocal register. All in all, I must congratulate Molly D’Ago on once again bringing her A-game to the music she creates, and I look forward to hearing what she does next.
