Let’s be clear on this, I love music with a message. I am a lyric listener at the core, and I have no time for any music meant to act as elevator music in my life, which is why when I heard the latest Alt/Rock single Journey Of Trials by New Jersey trio, The Finite Beings, I was instantly excited about where this new song would take me.
The Finite Beings are not one to shy away from their faith-driven roots, but rather than lean on a preachy approach to discussing that strong belief, they instead focus on asking the hard questions that they want to know the answers to. Journey Of Trials is a journey through the current social landscape, and the outlook on where we are as a society doesn’t look to good currently to the band, and I must agree. But this isn’t to say that this fast-paced and hard-hitting single doesn’t bring hope with it, because it most certainly does. Asking to be helped to break through the darkness that surrounds us with a glorious light is exactly what I think hope should look like.
Journey Of Trials continues with what The Finite Beings have been doing all along, and that is evolving as a band. Their previous songs are all unique in their own way, but none of them feel particularly stuck in a genre box. It is as if the band has been focused on gaining more confidence as a songwriting collective than trying to define their specific style, and with that in mind we have come to what I think is the crowning achievement for this band. Journey Of Trials is a song that keeps elevating itself to an exciting final chorus that lifts right off from a quick but effective solo. It’s a beautifully dark song with a sense of love and admiration, and it is exactly what this lyric listener wanted to hear from a band that brought us the emotionally charged EP, A Shell Of What Could Be.
If this is how The Finite Beings are choosing to start 2024 then I can’t wait to see what comes next this year for them!
