The Pop/Hip-Hop genre has always made for fertile ground for those socially conscious musicians looking to say something with a real deep meaning, and for Sydney, Australia’s own Ankur Saxena, making sure that his words are approached in a mindful way is clearly his truest creative intention. Recently releasing his new EP “Shades,” Ankur has been holding nothing back, and has embraced the beautiful honesty to be found in wearing your heart on your sleeve.
In his lead single ‘Last In Line,’ Ankur openly questions the corporate machine and cold social-media-culture that seems to penetrate the psyche of his own mind. Beautifully composed, Last In Line feels at home with anthem-like ballads from acts like Mike Shinoda and Mac Miller, and there is a real human spirit to be found within the emotionally charged song that will speak to many of Ankur’s listeners.
Currently promoting the new music video for his thoughtful new single ‘Down This Road,’ Ankur reflects back on the way it feels to keep repeating the same cycle of watching friends move away, the hardships found hiding in the cracks of memories, and the desire to escape from an emotional space where time feels like it is standing still for him; while it moves forward for so many others. Down This Road acts as a cathartic message from the artist to his own self, to say that it is time to move on and stop thinking about it; an emotional revolution of the spirit.

Shades is a powerful and well produced EP from yet another great Australian musician, and it is refreshingly honest hip-hop that doesn’t hide behind mumble-rap and vocalizers to get the job done. Ankur can sing and harmonize, and his lyric delivery is both clear and concise; all tell-tale signs of an aware musician with a serious message that needs to be heard. Every song off the Shades Ep is radio-ready, and that is a straight-out production conscious compliment, as it is meant to state clearly that there is nothing to overlook here in the professional quality of every song added to this powerful album; and for this reason, I must give a shout-out to the talented Rich Mammoliti for his slick mix-down of Shades.
Ankur’s strength as musician lies in the depth of his lyrics, which he bases on a foundation of ideas inspired by self-improvement, introspection, and the desire to empower his listeners to move forward from the place they are standing still. For Ankur, music is a conscious journey through a dark place with a guiding light at the end of the tunnel; a hopeful place filled with warmth.
There is a lot of heart to be found within this potent EP, and for many listeners, Shades is going to offer up a healthy dose of reflection and hope. For an indie artist to release something as polished as this is a true statement of how seriously that artist views his own message.
