Look Coldwards, you didn’t need to put out another incredible song to impress me, but you did, and I appreciate that shit!

The last song that made me a fan of yours was that kick-to-the-nuts single ‘Bad News’, to say that you set the bar high for yourselves is an understatement, and so when I received your new single ‘Flatline’ I was a little apprehensive about whether the song would itself, flatline.
Well, I am on my fifth consecutive spin of this single, with each time turning it up a little more, and I have to say, you did it again! You created another song that goes straight for the heart, and the throat.

The opening of Flatline is devastatingly aggressive, but it’s the lyrics that are going to break some people down HARD.
“It just hit me that your gone,
That I’ll never see your face again.
All these memories all at once,
It’s too hard to make it all make sense.
I wanna scream,
I wanna cry,
cause I believed we had more time.
And now I dream a flatline,
I guess I’ll see you in another life.”

I am going to be real with you here.

My brother took his life some years back, and these lyrics hit me like fucking, tsunami. It is one of those things that I have been able to compartmentalize extremely well, but then an artist like Coldwards comes along and forces you to look in the mirror and remember that persons face in such heartbreaking detail. But to be clear, the song doesn’t invite you into your thoughts aggressively, so much as it comes from a genuine place of introspection from the band.

The beauty of music, or art in general, is that it connects us all in times of need, and ‘Flatline’ by Coldwards proves this point incredibly. I have never met this band, but because of this song I feel as if I may have. If you are a lyric listener, like I am, then you just know when can appreciate the people behind these types of authentic words. I know how hard it is to decide how much of your pain you will share, and how important it is to share it so completely, because the message is far more important than our egos.

I am aware of how strange of a review this has turned out to be. Usually, I would talk about the musicianship, and trust me, it’s all there, but I would also take the time to weave in some clever metaphors to explain how each member brings their own special thing to the proverbial table, but this song levelled me, and I just want to focus on the effect that it had on my heart.

I don’t know if you like heavy music, or if you have ever lost someone that meant something so much to you. I have no idea if this song will hit you the same as it did me, but if there is a chance that you miss someone, and you want to find some comfort in knowing that you are not alone in that pain, then perhaps Flatline by Coldwards is for you.
It certainly was for me.
